I got a door jamb made to fit an expensive set of Rouge Valley French doors. When it came I discovered several problems with assembly and design. They assembled it using staples at the joints and way too much caulking. As for the design, there were many small problems with their choice of aluminum threshold. The wood trim on the threshold was a different wood type and color from the jamb and door's wood.
The threshold didn't have any flat plating underneath for caulking to be applied, making it weatherproof. Also, the threshold stuck out past the threshold, over the interior's flooring. I built my sill dead flat, but the flooring (being an old house) was not. That meant that one side set perfectly on the floor but the other end was 3/8" off the floor.
So I called their sales rep to explain what the situation was and to find out what they could do about it. He offered no apology or explanation to why the wood types were mismatched. He then told me that their jamb is designed to be set on a sill that is narrower than the threshold, and caulking wouldn't matter. I told him that I had an older house with a sill wider than their (unknown) 2x4 sill requirement but narrower than their 2x6's.
Side note: I've purchased and installed another Rouge Valley door that had a jamb made by a different woodworker who's aluminum threshold was not wider than the jamb, so had no such requirement. Also, without a disclaimer of some sort on the purchase order, I would have no way of knowing that. No apology or recourse was given and basically told me that I designed it wrong!
He then told me that the floor had to be level for their door to work! I told him that that was ridiculous, I didn't have problem with the previous door's installation an I had followed the same design for the French doors as the single door. I also said that there isn't a 100 year old house in the world with a flat floor. I then asked how I was supposed to fix these problems.
He told me he didn't know and that it was " the installer's problem"! Again no apology or corse of remedy, just excuses. I politely but sternfuly told him that that was unacceptable. He responded by abruptly hanging up on me! Bad product and worse support.
