Our 35 years of Locksmith and door installation experience have made us a go to company in Santa Cruz, CA. We do emergency, residential, commercial and auto lockouts and lock rekeying as well as sales and installation of deadbolts, locksets, ADA locks, mortise locks, keypad locks, touchscreen locks, panic hardware, door closers and a full line of doors and door hardware.
We have a paint spray shop where we pre-paint and pre stain doors, frames and trim prior to door installation. This makes it possible for us to install a new door, new locks, rekey the new locks to your existing key, install new weatherstripping and dispose of your old door, all in one day.

Steve came out very quickly to fix a front door that was no longer latching. He fixed the door, the price was reasonable, the service was excellent. I found nothing nefarious about Steven's business practices, his work, or his demeanor. He seems like a no nonsense guy that fixes doors. Which he did. Quickly. And competently. So happy we called Steve.

Steve came out and probably used up a good 4 hours of his time (getting here and then evaluating my project). He seemed very knowledgeable, and had a solution for every problem I had, so I was excited to get the project going. The cost of the project seemed reasonable as well. The reason I am giving one star is because he refused the project due to our HOA, which required a permit for door replacements.
If that's all it was and it was accompanied by a good explanation, I wouldn't feel the need to do this. But please keep reading. Steve claimed that he has never had to get a permit for door replacements, but the HOA said it was a newer county requirement. Steve refused to take my deposit, and didn't exactly say why other than the HOA would make it "impossible" for him to do the job.
I don't think it is impossible to get a permit for the work, unless of course, there is some issue with your license, bond, or insurance. It wasn't the work itself that made it impossible. he said the HOA made it impossible. But he didn't say why. He refused the project over email without explanation. I politely expressed my disappointment and asked for an explanation, but he never got back to me.
This is why the one-star review. When people don't explain their actions in situations like this, it is either a disregard for common courtesy and decorum (you just don't treat people like this), or he is hiding something (some reason why he can't obtain a permit, or maybe he's just old and tired). Be careful working with Steve and verify with the county if you need a permit for the work he might perform on your property. I have the sense there is something dishonest underfoot.

Great service. Quick response. Steve had us in our house in a matter of minutes. If you need locksmith help call him.! We locked ourselves out of our home late last night. We called a few 24 hour services for help but none would respond or come to our aid. This morning I called A-1 and Steve answered quickly and was there to help us within 30 min. Great service for us. Steve did an outstanding job installing an interior double french door. The rough opening wasn't perfectly square which necessitated a lot of extra work-a whole day actually and a lot of dust. He built a plastic tent to protect the house from the dust and did a thorough clean up. He had also installed a double front door for us more than ten years ago with the same high quality work. He is responsive to customers and his fees are very competitive.

A-1 is outstanding. Was a bit late but called beforehand to explain. He actually talked me out of adding an additional deadbolt, demonstrating that I already had a great deadbolt. Had all my doors re-keyed at a reasonable price. I will never go to another locksmith for my security needs. Great service. Mark Greenfeldt

A1 locksmith came to my house when he said he would, brought a lock to replace a completely broken doorknob and completed his task efficiently. Also directed me to a store to select my new front door and assured me all of my locks will be working with one key, as soon as my special order door arrives. Steve was courteous, timely and efficient. Can't say enough good thinks about him and his company.

I've never written a YELP review before but I had such a good experience that I had to do this! I locked my keys in my trunk and called, Steve, the owner, and he called me back almost immediately. He showed up in less than a half an hour and didn't do any kind of damage to my car. And I thought his price was totally fair.

He was quick to respond and available! The other locksmithing people do not respond at all or call to tell you that they do not have anybody available. Steve is the guy to call! No Doubt! He was on time as promised. Gave me a clear and fair quote over the phone and gave me clear advice on which option to pick. Made it easy and he was VERY professional. No doubt. He is the person to call for your lock and key needs.

Steve Doblick of A-1 Deadbolt & Door came out to install a deadbolt for one of our bedrooms/office. He arrived on time and did an excellent job and actually improved the original door connection with the jamb before installing the deadbolt. He honored his initial bid for $105 even though it took close to 2.5 hours to make a perfect fit. I was happy to add a $20 bill in appreciation for his work and professionalism and for his success in getting through a recent and serious medical health problem. Never met him before but I have no reservations recommending him for your lock and door needs.
