Before founding Westgate Hardwoods, Ivan Hoath began his career working for an architect in Los Angeles, winning many awards for his drawings in school competitions. After moving to Chico in 1981, he earned a living by making toys and furniture. In the years following, a partner from Wisconsin helped him enter the hardwood retail business, and by the early 90s, Westgate Hardwoods had become a full-service millwork company.
Orchard walnut has many unique features. Technically, it is two species, not a hybrid. The base of an orchard walnut tree is Juglans hindsii, or California black walnut. The mid and upper trunk is Juglans regia, or English walnut. The two species meet in a dramatic graft line that is visible in many of our floors.
Westgate Urban Woods was founded on a passion for Claro Walnut. The species grows exceptionally well in the Sacramento Valley of northern California. During the last century, these trees were planted along primary roads and property lines in Chico, California. In addition to the walnut, Westgate Urban Woods has branched out to acquire other local species.

Please do yourself a favor and avoid this company. I purchased a slab to be milled and the face and edge to be sanded. Ariana Stillwell nicely handled the order and subsequent communication. Unfortunately, the product was shipped with edges exposed, allowing damage to the product. The company, and Alec Hoath specifically, refused to take responsibility.
This was clearly a packaging error and a poorly conceived plan. A store credit for the "value" of the slab was offered, but this would be the last place where I would want a store credit, much less a vacant offer. Avoid please.
